Re/Convening: Native Arts of Oklahoma

Juried exhibition July 3, 2020-September 20, 2020

I was honored to be selected by the guest curator, Heather Ahtone, for this show at Ahha in Tulsa: "Re/Convening: Native Arts of Oklahoma." The show included a beautiful range of styles by Indigenous artists in Oklahoma. The wall panels were warm and more personal than the usual museum panels, which the audience received well.

I am interested in ancient ideas about stars and deep space and the life-giving powers of the cosmos. My paintings of the night sky celebrate our ancestors, who watched the stars to track the seasons and guide their lives. The Choctaw titles help me touch the past as I consider the timeless beauty of the Milky Way path. In Hubble telescope images, new stars fill the surrounding gases with a pink light; Fishik Atta (Star Birth) celebrates the beginning of these stars.
