The Oklahoma paintings celebrate the ancient star symbols and the traditions of native peoples centered around watching the skies to understand and organize daily life. The symbol for our sun-star is found on ancient ceramic vessels and incised shell gorgets from the mounds of the Southeastern Ceremonial Complex. The sun and star symbols are ancient yet they feel modern and abstract. They are painted with mica flakes. The hand symbol is cut into large shapes of mica inspired by those found in the Hopewell Mound. These symbols are embedded in flowing paint to represent the billowing gases and dust discerned in our dense, ancient Milky Way galaxy as a way of honoring the ancient peoples and the ancient galaxy.
